A radio scanner can be a useful tool to own, since it allows you to scan all the nearby radio frequencies so that you can get all the local radio stations, public safety channels, and fire chatter for free.

Many find these devices invaluable, and Uniden is one of the best known brands in this market. Also responsible for the well known Bearcat range of radio scanners, the 100 channel version offers a great range and sound quality at a great price.
Radio Selection
The Uniden can store up to 30 radio channels at once, with up to 10 AM frequency stations and 20 FM/TV stations. This is more than enough to cover all the local radio stations in your area and the reception will be a lot better than a small radio would be. It is important to check that analogue TV signals are still being broadcast in your area, since a lot of areas in the US have stopped broadcasting in analogue and use digital transmissions instead. Although, if you are buying a radio scanner it is unlikely that you would use it to listen to TV channels in any case – that is what the TV and an Onkyo HT-S3300 is for after all!
Public Radio and Weather Reports
The Uniden can find transmission in the NOAA weather band, which makes it handy if you want keep a tab on how the day may turn out and to know what is ahead before anyone else. Public radio is also accessible easily. Fire and Police broadcasts can also be tuned into with this radio, but it is prudent to check what frequencies are in use by your local police department, since many police forces around the country are now using trunking in the 800MHz band, and this scanner won’t be able to pick them up.
Built In Radio
If you are going to keep your scanner in the bedroom then the unit also comes with a handy alarm clock that will prevent you from sleeping in. Obviously the speakers are not as good as a high quality set such as the Polk RC85i, but they are quite clear for their purpose. While you may wonder why this feature is included it can be handy to have – one can never have too many alarm clocks!
The Uniden 100 channel scanner can run on both ac power as well as on batteries, and it is intelligent enough to switch over from one to the other whenever it is plugged and unplugged. Since Uniden is a quality brand you also won’t have to worry about losing all the stations you have stored in a power cut – it will remember them all for you.
100 Station Capacity
The scanner can save up to 100 channels which is more than enough to register all the stations in your area. If you are looking for a decent quality scanner at a sub-$100 price, the Uniden ticks all the right boxes and makes for a great replacement for an aging scanner, or a great gift for someone with an interest in radio scanning technology.
