Listening to Internet Radio Without a PC
So wouldn’t it be good if you could get a device that could let you listen to all these stations without you having to boot up your computer, so that you could enjoy internet radio anywhere in the house? Well Myine Electronics have just release the Myine IRA, an internet radio adapter that purports do just that. Coming in at just under 2 pounds in weight, this small device is designed to connect to your wireless broadband router and comes pre-configured with over 11,000 radio stations so that you will never be lacking in choice again. The device does not have built in speakers, instead giving good sound quality through the RCA jack, so you can easily connect it to your Polk RC85i or other speakers, or even quality headphones such as a set of Audio Technica ATH-M50S. The first thing that you can definitely say about the Myine Electronics IR001 is that it is not expensive, which is surprising giving how much demand there seems to be for this product. So does it live up to expectations?
Setting Up the Myine IRA
Myine claims in their marketing blurb that the Ira can connect to just about any wireless signal just out of the box – although this is technically true, there are some caveats. Firstly you will need to know the password in order to connect to a wireless access point, which most likely means that you will have to own it. If you already have your own wireless router then you are all set. The Ira only has a few buttons with which to enter the password, which makes it a little bit cumbersome to set up, certainly a lot harder than setting up a Sonos Zonebridge. If you use WPA and your security method it is simple to enter the password but if you are still using an older security protocol like WEP (why? This is fairly easily beaten these days) then it can be a paid to enter the 10 digits perfectly, since with one mistake and the password resets! Thankfully you will only have to do this once after first taking it out of the box so it is no big deal.
Sound Quality
This is where this little device excels – the sound quality is excellent, and the CD quality audio you get from most stations comes out surprisingly very clear from the small speakers. It comes with a remote control so you can change the channel easily from afar. One small downside is that it takes a second or two to change channel but this is more a limitation of how streaming music over the internet operates rather than a failure of the device. The Myine Ira looks great too, with the sleek black look and minimal buttons making it somehow sexy.
Overall
If you want a semi portable wifi internet radio player that can be easily moved around the home with you so that you can take advantage to the vast array of internet radio then there really is no other device that can compare, short of a laptop that it. A perfect product perfectly realized – and since the unit can be updated with new firmware when it is release it is only going to get better as time goes on.
